Li Tan previously held the position of general director of Cadence Design Systems, a producer of software solutions used by all leading microchip manufacturers, including Intel.

Intel announced the appointment of Li Tan as the new principal director in the environment, at a time when the chipmaker is striving for recovery after four years of burning issues under Bob Swan's leadership.

He was a member of Intel's board of directors but left last year due to other obligations. Tan replaced interim directors David Zinser and Megan Houlthaus, who held this position in December after being laid off.

Shares rose by 12% in the post-trading session.
