Polymarket Scandal: Betting on Pilots' Fate Sparks Washington Anger

The prediction market platform Polymarket is at the center of a fierce controversy after issuing a public apology for allowing its users to place bets on the fate of two American pilots whose plane was shot down in Iran. The incident, which has sparked a strong reaction in Washington, involves a two-seat F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet that was hit by Iranian forces last Friday. As the search for the pilot continues, the debate over the ethical limits of betting during times of armed conflict is escalating in US political spheres. While one crew member may have been successfully rescued, the second crew member remains missing, triggering a high-risk search and rescue operation. Before it was removed, the market in question allowed users to bet on the exact time the rescue of the military would be confirmed, under the premise: "Are the pilots rescued for...?". The company assured that it is investigating how this betting option managed to evade its internal safeguards. In response to the criticism, Polymarket removed the market immediately, stating that the publication did not meet its internal integrity standards. Representative Seth Moulton, a Marine veteran, called the existence of such a market "repugnant". Moulton emphasized that these military personnel could be neighbors, friends, or relatives of any citizen, and betting on their survival while a dangerous mission is underway is unacceptable. Concerns about potential conflicts of interest have also been raised; Moulton pointed out that Donald Trump Jr. is an investor in Polymarket and may have access to privileged intelligence information. However, Moulton countered that Polymarket still maintains over 200 betting markets related to the war. This scandal has intensified the Congress's scrutiny of prediction platforms, whose popularity has grown exponentially in recent time. Currently, there are legislative proposals led by Democrats seeking to ban betting linked to wars, elections, and government actions.
