The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico reported that since the beginning of Donald Trump's second term in the United States, 13 Mexican migrants have died in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "This is absolutely unacceptable to the Government of Mexico, because we are talking about 13 people who have tragically lost their lives in migration operations or under ICE custody," said Deputy Secretary for North America, Roberto Velasco, during a presidential press conference. Four deaths were recorded in California, three in Georgia, two in Arizona, and one each in Texas, Florida, Missouri, and another unspecified state. The victims were between 19 and 69 years old. According to reports, six deaths were due to medical complications, four by suicide, two during ICE operations, and one in a shooting in Dallas. The Foreign Ministry has offered support to the families of the deceased and has already filed two lawsuits on their behalf. Additionally, Mexico has conveyed its disagreement to Washington through 14 diplomatic communications, "stating that this is unacceptable to us, expressing our enormous concern and rejection of this happening in this way." Velasco also detailed that the State Department has responded to 12 of the requests, and in all cases, investigations have been opened by ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility. The head of the SRE, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, reported that from January 20, 2025, to today, ICE has detained 177,192 Mexican migrants. "Currently, the figure is 13,722 people detained," said the official.
