Trump determined to end war in Ukraine, says U.S. deputy secretary of state

The U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, stated on Monday before the UN Security Council that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, is “determined” to end the war in Ukraine.

“From the day he took office again, Trump has made it clear that he is determined to end the war in Ukraine. The conflict would never have happened if he had been president,” Landau assured during a UN Security Council session on the situation in Ukraine.

Landau criticized the UN and its “inability to stop the war”: “The main reason the UN was created after World War II was to end future wars, but the organization continues to get bogged down in secondary issues and fails in that fundamental mission,” he asserted.

The Deputy Secretary of State emphasized that the Republican government continues to work to achieve a peace agreement in Ukraine and stated that peace would bring “unprecedented prosperity to the region.”

“It is regrettable that the UN has not played the constructive role in the search for peace that President Trump has exercised,” he insisted.

During his speech, he expressed that he “fervently hopes” that the U.S. presidency in the Security Council, which ends this month, “will mark a turning point” and lead the UN to “go beyond words” to chart “a path to peace.”

Landau also stated that the Trump administration maintains its commitment to working with Russia and Ukraine to end the war and called on both parties to negotiate “in good faith, with a spirit of flexibility and commitment and the duty to protect the lives of their citizens.”

Delegations from the United States and Ukraine met this weekend in Miami, in a meeting where the Ukrainian delegation aimed to reiterate to Washington its commitment to peace negotiations, as well as set a new date for another trilateral meeting with Russia.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said after the meetings that there could be more prisoner exchanges between his country and Russia, and reiterated that it is “necessary to end the war.”

More than 15,000 civilians have died in Ukraine since the conflict began, which has also left more than 41,000 injured and millions displaced, according to UN figures.
