Trump Administration Expands Visa Denial Grounds Based on Health

In the latest efforts of the US President Donald Trump's administration to curb immigration flow, the Washington Post reported that the US administration has instructed consular officials to consider obesity, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes as reasons for denying entry visas to the United States. The newspaper states that Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed US consulates and embassies worldwide of these changes in a cable dated November 6, a copy of which the newspaper obtained and verified. This step expands the scope of the current medical examination to include non-communicable diseases and gives visa officials a new reason to reject applicants. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated: 'For 100 years, State Department policy has included the authority to deny applications from individuals who would become a financial burden on taxpayers, such as those seeking publicly funded medical care in the United States, which could deplete healthcare resources for American citizens.'
