The United States recently launched a new digital tool called CBP Home, presented by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office. This tool includes the “Intent to Depart” function, which allows immigrants in an irregular situation to notify the government of their intention to leave the country voluntarily.
According to an official statement, this new feature is part of Executive Order 14159 signed by the president, focused on immigration control and border security. Acting CBP Commissioner Pete Flores mentioned that the application facilitates a defined process for those who wish to leave the country before facing more severe consequences.
Flores stated that CBP Home seeks to provide an easy way for illegal foreigners to declare their voluntary departure, giving them the opportunity to avoid stricter penalties. The initiative is also part of a broader effort by the U.S. government to digitize and streamline immigration processes, reduce administrative burdens, and improve border security using technology.
Among the functions offered by CBP Home is the ability to apply for I-94, make advance payments for entry permits, request inspection appointments for perishable shipments, check wait times at the border, and submit passenger manifests for buses.
Although the application is intended to facilitate voluntary departure for those who wish to leave the United States before facing forced deportation processes, it has raised concerns and various reactions within the migrant community and human rights organizations. Some experts warn that the measure could be interpreted as a form of pressure for irregular immigrants to opt for self-deportation, or whether those who use the “Intent to Depart” function will be subject to reprisals or monitoring by immigration authorities.
Despite the concerns, CBP emphasizes that this tool is a voluntary option for those who wish to leave the country before facing forced deportation processes and the resulting penalties.
