The government of President Donald Trump is conducting a strong campaign of mass deportation of migrants and has decided to close the southern border between Mexico and the United States. However, acts of corruption between U.S. immigration agents and cartels have recently been uncovered. Apparently, some elements of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are collaborating with drug cartels in Mexico to allow the passage of drug traffickers and undocumented migrants into American territory.
According to reports from the BBC, this is not the first time cases of corruption have been detected at the border between Mexico and the United States. Since 2010, corruption among members of official agencies at border entry points has been on the rise. In a recent video published by journalist Luis Chaparro on his YouTube channel called 'Pie de Nota,' it shows how Customs agents opened the gates to smugglers in Ciudad Juárez.
Chaparro reveals that at the location where migrants crossed, one of the main surveillance cameras has not been functioning for some time, and near that site, a tunnel was discovered through which migrants were also trafficked. According to Chaparro, there is corruption on both sides of the border between Mexico and the United States, as local authorities in Ciudad Juárez and American officials have overlooked these illicit acts.
The journalist mentions that drug cartels are using this video to show interested people how to cross the border safely and what the cost for this service is. It is estimated that traffickers pay between $20,000 and $30,000 to U.S. agents to open the gates, while they charge each undocumented migrant between $10,000 and $20,000 for the crossing.
These acts of corruption have been increasing in recent decades and coincide with the policies implemented by the Donald Trump administration, which seeks to prevent the entry of undocumented migrants into the United States.
