U.S. President Donald Trump stated to reporters on Monday that Microsoft is in negotiations to purchase TikTok, and that he would like to see a trade deal for this application. Microsoft and TikTok did not respond to Reuters' request for comments outside of working hours.
Earlier, Trump stated he would lead negotiations with certain stakeholders regarding the acquisition of TikTok and plans to make a decision on the future of the application within the next 30 days. After the law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban came into effect on January 19, the application, which has about 170 million users in the U.S., was briefly taken offline.
"After taking office on January 20, Trump signed an order calling for a 75-day delay in the enforcement of the law enacted after U.S. officials warned of the risk of improper use of data from Americans under the control of ByteDance."
