Diesel Spill at Texas Refinery

A diesel spill registered at the Deer Park refinery dock in Texas triggered alerts at facilities of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), which activated emergency protocols to contain the incident that occurred on April 13, 2026. According to an official company statement, the event was caused by the interaction between two private vessels: one that was being refueled and another that had completed its loading and was heading to the navigation channel exit. Protocols activated and spill zone isolated. Following the incident, the refinery immediately activated its response mechanisms, including issuing a Level 3 alert through the Community Awareness and Emergency Response (CAER) system, indicating that the leak was contained at its source. Pemex detailed that the affected area was isolated and that cleanup and repair operations would extend for approximately two days. A company spokesperson, cited by local ABC13 Houston, reported that specialized personnel and external contractors were working on containment and remediation of the area, while constant monitoring was being conducted. No impact on navigation or community, authorities assure. The company assured that the incident did not affect maritime traffic in the Houston navigation channel, one of the most relevant logistical corridors in the United States. In the same vein, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed it does not anticipate closures for the channel, which rules out, for the moment, any impact on port operations. Likewise, Pemex indicated that no impacts on the surrounding community have been detected, although assessments continue as part of the protocol. Deer Park and the recent context of incidents. The spill adds to other recent events related to Pemex-linked energy infrastructure, both in the Gulf of Mexico and at the Dos Bocas refinery. The Deer Park refinery, located in Texas, was acquired by the Government of Mexico in 2021 through an operation valued at 600 million dollars, during the administration of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. More recently, on March 13, 2026, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated that the facility was under maintenance and rejected versions pointing to a greater deterioration of the plant. Although Pemex maintains that the spill was contained without major consequences, the incident occurs at a key moment for the company's international operation, amidst reviews of the status of its strategic facilities.
