The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, complied with President Donald Trump's orders by changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America' during a weather alert. This change was made after Trump expressed his desire to rename the gulf after taking office. Despite this, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated that it will remain the Gulf of Mexico for the entire world.
Sheinbaum proposed calling the territory that spans the United States and Mexico 'Mexican America'; however, Florida decided to ignore these statements and was the first state to adopt the name 'Gulf of America.' This was carried out through an executive order related to the Gulf's climate emergency system.
In his inauguration speech, Trump declared his intention to change the name of the gulf as part of his vision to restore America's greatness. Although Trump has promised this change, Sheinbaum assured that the rest of the world will continue to refer to the body of water as the Gulf of Mexico.
In a recent weather alert, Florida authorities are already referring to the 'Gulf of America.' Elon Musk has commented on this, expressing that the name sounds good. On the other hand, the information sheet of the alert mentions that a winter storm is approaching the western Panhandle of Florida through the 'Gulf of America.'
Trump also expressed his intention to 'reclaim' control of the Panama Canal in his speech. Although there has been speculation about these decisions, for now, the gulf continues to be known globally as the Gulf of Mexico.
