The President of the United States, Joe Biden, came to the defense of Puerto Rico after a derogatory joke made by a speaker at a Donald Trump rally in New York. Biden criticized the former Republican president for his words, calling him a failed businessman who despises the Latino community and immigrants, even suggesting that they poison the country's blood.
During a call with journalists from the organization Voto Latino, Biden emphasized that Trump does not care about the Latino community and recalled the remark at the rally where Puerto Rico was referred to as a 'floating garbage island.' The Democratic president made it clear that Puerto Rico is not garbage, but patriots who love the United States.
At an event in Allentown, Marco Rubio, a Cuban-American senator from Florida, who has been invited by Trump to several rallies to attract the Hispanic vote, also criticized Biden's statements. Rubio expects Biden's campaign to apologize for his words. Both Trump and other Republican politicians rejected Biden's comments, calling his criticism excessive and un-American.
