In Washington, D.C., Democratic candidate Joe Biden has been declared the 46th president of the United States. He won the battle against Republican President Donald Trump, the sitting head of state who refuses to concede the victory to his opponent.
After several days of tense waiting, during which the country closely monitored the counting of ballots, Biden surpassed 270 electoral votes needed for victory in the election.
"From the bottom of my heart, I thank the American people for their trust. I promise to be the president for all Americans, even for those who did not vote for me," Biden said.
The country's vice president will be Kamala Harris, who will become the first woman, the first Black woman, and the first Asian American to hold this position.
"I may be the first, but I won’t be the last," Harris said, emphasizing her aim to open doors for other women and girls.
