A bipartisan group of U.S. representatives proposes to extend the Affordable Care Act for a year to prevent rising healthcare costs and ensure coverage for 30 million Americans.

US Lawmakers Seek to Extend Obamacare Subsidies

A group of bipartisan U.S. House representatives is seeking a reform to allow the continuation of the Obamacare healthcare plan and avoid a massive increase in the country's healthcare costs. The proposal's main goal is to extend the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) by one year. This initiative has been primarily advanced by New Jersey Democrat Josh Gottheimer and Virginia Republican Jen Kiggans, according to CNN. The extension proposal will be discussed in the House on Thursday, including measures to prevent alleged fraud, which has been Republicans' main argument for repealing this health law, in effect since 2010 during Barack Obama's administration. While the plan itself lacks some key details, it is a notable step by a group of House centrists demonstrating their seriousness in the bill's proposal. Additionally, it is, to date, the largest bipartisan coalition supporting any plan to address the soon-to-expire subsidies. The parliamentary debate to scrap Obamacare was key to pushing the country into the longest government shutdown in its history last October, when both parties failed to reach an agreement to renew this health coverage that benefits more than 30 million people nationwide.
