Supreme Court Allows Trump to Halt Food Stamp Payments

Washington, Nov 12 (EFE).- The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday extended the order that allows the Donald Trump administration to suspend November food stamp payments, as it awaits Congress to soon approve a government reopening and resume disbursements. The high court extended the suspension of payments for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which nearly 42 million people rely on, by two more days, until Thursday. Supreme Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson issued an "administrative stay" on Friday of a lower court order in Rhode Island that required Trump to resume payments, a suspension that the Court extended on Tuesday. The court did not rule on the merits of the case, as the House of Representatives is expected to pass a federal budget extension this week that would allow the government to reopen and resume all programs, including SNAP. The Senate approved the budgets on Monday, with the vote of a group of rebellious Democrats who joined the Republicans, so only the approval of the Lower House and Trump's signature are missing. Food stamps have become the main legal front during the current government shutdown, which at 42 days is the longest in the country's history, paralyzing the functioning of federal agencies and the funding of social programs. The Department of Agriculture had planned to use contingency funds to cover only half of the SNAP program, but lower courts ordered it to be fully funded, so the Trump administration elevated the case to the Supreme Court.
