The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced the implementation of a 100 percent tariff on movies filmed abroad to promote domestic film production. This measure has raised concerns in the film industry, and comedian Eugenio Derbez has expressed his opinion on the matter.
In an interview with journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva, Derbez highlighted that filming in other countries is often more economical due to the tax incentives they offer, in contrast to the high costs of filming in places like Los Angeles. The Mexican actor suggested that instead of imposing tariffs, it would be more effective to provide tax incentives to attract major producers back to the United States.
Derbez pointed out that the imposition of tariffs would affect the entire film industry, leading to a significant increase in the costs of foreign films at U.S. box offices, which would have a negative impact on the film industry in Mexico. The comedian also mentioned Netflix's recent investment in Mexican productions as an example of the importance of maintaining a global film market.
The actor believes that large entertainment companies, such as Amazon and Netflix, will not allow this tariff to remain, as it favors filming outside the United States. Despite Trump's announcement, the White House has clarified that it has not yet made definitive decisions regarding the implementation of these tariffs, indicating that various options are being considered to comply with the president's directive while strengthening the national film industry.
