Republican Push to Rename Gulf of Mexico

Republicans in southern states are advocating for the formal adoption of 'Gulf of the United States' instead of 'Gulf of Mexico', prompting legislative moves in Florida and Louisiana. Critics label the initiative as a political stunt.

Republican Push to Rename Gulf of Mexico

Republicans from the southern states of the United States are pushing for their entities to formally adopt the name United States Gulf, designated by President Donald Trump for the Gulf of Mexico, and demand its use in maps, textbooks, and signage.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has enacted two bills this week requiring the use of 'United States Gulf' in state legislation and textbooks. In March, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed an executive order for state materials to reflect the name change.

'This bill will make it clear when you buy maps, when you buy textbooks,' expressed Standridge.

Democrats have criticized the measure, calling it a costly political gesture that will end a name deeply rooted in the southern states. 'It's time to stop doing silly things and start doing things that move us forward,' said Democratic Representative Barbara Drummond during the debate.

Representative Kenyatte Hassell questioned whether changing the name was viable long-term if another president decided to reverse the decision. Standridge acknowledged it was a possibility but doubted it would happen.

The initiative, passed with a divided vote, will move to the Alabama Senate. Republican Representative David Standridge, the bill's sponsor, sought to provide clear direction to governmental entities about which name to use.

The Louisiana Department of Education has already announced an update to social studies standards to incorporate the new name. Republicans defend the measure as a point of national pride, while some Democrats see it as a transparent political strategy.

The Alabama House of Representatives voted in favor of advancing the bill that requires state and local government entities to use the name United States Gulf. It also establishes the obligation to update maps, textbooks, and other materials.
