Rubén Oseguera González, known as "El Menchito", has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the United States for drug-related offenses. The sentence was handed down by federal judge Beryl A. Howell of the District of Columbia, based on two charges related to drug trafficking and the use of firearms.
Oseguera González was found guilty in September 2024 of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and methamphetamines, as well as possession of firearms and destructive devices for drug trafficking purposes. The judge also ordered him to pay over 6 billion dollars in damages, while the prosecution sought a fine of up to 12 billion dollars.
"El Menchito", son of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was first arrested in January 2014 in Zapopan, Jalisco, but was released shortly after due to lack of evidence. In 2015, he was detained again in the same municipality by Mexican Army forces and the Federal Police.
In 2020, Oseguera González was extradited to the United States, where he currently faces charges before the Federal District Court. The prosecution advocated for a life sentence for him, which has now been carried out.
