Court Blocks Trump's Citizenship Decree

A federal judge has issued a nationwide injunction blocking Trump's decree that aimed to deny US citizenship to children born in the country to non-citizen parents. This injunction follows previous temporary halts and reaffirms the Constitution's 14th Amendment. Immigrant rights groups praise the ruling as a significant victory.

Court Blocks Trump's Citizenship Decree

A judge appointed by Joe Biden issued a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the implementation of a decree by Donald Trump, which was scheduled to take effect on February 19. The decision has been positively received by opponents of the measure, who previously achieved a temporary pause.

The decree in question signed by Trump on January 20 instructed U.S. agencies not to recognize the citizenship of children born in the U.S. if their parents were not U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. Immigrant rights groups argued that this measure violated the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees automatic citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil.

Federal Judge Deborah Boardman in Maryland became the second in the U.S. to block the implementation of this decree. Her ruling favored two immigrant rights groups and five pregnant women who expressed concern about their children's citizenship due to their immigration status.

In Judge Boardman's words: 'As of today, virtually all babies born on U.S. soil are U.S. citizens at birth.'
