New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has been one of the few voices within the Democratic Party openly opposing the Trump administration's plans for mass deportation of undocumented immigrants. In an open debate, Murphy revealed that he has an undocumented immigrant hiding in his home, joking ironically that if federal agents come for her, he wishes them "good luck."
Unlike the Democratic Party, there has been no dissenting voice within the Republican Party regarding Trump's deportation plans. During his first week in office, Trump has implemented measures against migrants, such as ending birthright citizenship, involving the military in border security tasks, and eliminating the CBP One application.
At the northern border of Mexico, activists and migrants have reported chaos and desperation due to deportations carried out by the Trump administration. It is questioned whether the Mexican government is prepared to receive the deported migrants, as the worst scenario has yet to materialize.
Uncertainty and fear have gripped the migrant community at the Mexico-U.S. border since Trump's return to the presidency. Evelyn Vázquez, a Guatemalan migrant, recounted how her legal entry process into the United States was abruptly halted on the day Trump took office. Thousands of migrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries have taken to the streets in various U.S. cities to protest against the immigration raids and deportations carried out by ICE.
Vázquez, who traveled with her three children, expressed her resignation to the situation, criticizing mass deportations and the inhumane treatment of migrants. Murphy shared in an open debate that he is housing an undocumented immigrant in his home, criticizing the harsh immigration policy.
