Trump Imposes New Tariffs on Mexico and Canada

Following tensions between the U.S. and Mexico, new tariffs will take effect, challenging Mexican officials and impacting trade relations.

Trump Imposes New Tariffs on Mexico and Canada

After several statements and threats from the President of the United States, Donald Trump, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt denied on Friday that the imposition of tariffs would be delayed and confirmed that new tariffs on Mexican products would take effect that day. Leavitt assured that her administration has been working on this issue for several weeks and stated: 'We have plan A, plan B, and plan C.'

President Trump had previously announced his intention to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China. Leavitt reiterated that as of Saturday, there will be a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff on China. She added that President Trump will implement these tariffs as a measure against the illegal fentanyl that has caused the death of numerous Americans.

In contrast, President Claudia Sheinbaum called for calm and 'cool heads' in light of possible decisions from Trump. Despite this, the Republican administration has not detailed which specific products will be subject to the tariffs aimed at the Mexican industry and production.

Leavitt denied a press report that suggested the possibility of postponing the tariffs until March 1 instead of February 1, as had previously been announced.
