Ben Stiller published an open letter in which he expressed his deep concern for the future of American democracy and denounced serious abuses by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The actor began his text by saying, "But, like many of us, I am concerned about the future of our democracy." Stiller also spoke about the "cold-blooded and broad daylight" murders committed by masked agents, whom he defined as "armed militias" acting with impunity in different communities. In his message, the actor stated that the victims were denied due process and that even after their deaths, they were stripped of their dignity by spreading false versions of what happened. "The victims were blamed and narratives were created that contradict what the whole world saw," he said. Stiller also appealed to the country's founding principles and recalled that the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were created to protect individual freedoms from possible state power abuses. In this sense, he warned that currently innocent people are being persecuted, separated from their families, and in some cases, murdered. In another part of the letter, Stiller quoted Martin Luther King Jr.: "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter," and called on citizens not to remain indifferent to the events he described. Finally, he demanded that politicians in his country must act with integrity, honesty, and respect for the popular will.
