The President of the United States, Donald Trump, reiterated his protectionist message during his participation in the Davos forum. In a virtual speech from Switzerland, Trump offered international companies lower taxes if they move their production to U.S. soil, warning that otherwise he would impose tariffs to strengthen the national economy.
"Come to manufacture your product in the United States, and we will offer you some of the lowest taxes of any nation on earth," Trump declared, adding that those who decide not to produce in the United States will have to face tariffs. The president emphasized his interest in strengthening the relationship with Mexico and Canada, as long as there is a fair deal between the nations.
Regarding Mexico, Trump expressed that the relationship is in good terms and highlighted the importance of fair treatment between both countries. Concerning Canada, he mentioned his concerns about the deficit in the bilateral relationship and even suggested that Canada become a state of the United States to avoid imposing tariffs.
On the other hand, Trump mentioned his first measures as president, including the deployment of the National Guard and other security authorities at the southern border to address undocumented migration, insisting that it is an invasion. He also encouraged business owners to repatriate production to the United States as part of his protectionist approach.
