EU Imposes Tariffs on US Goods Amid Trade Tensions

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the European Union will impose tariffs on U.S. products worth 26 billion euros in response to the 28 billion dollar tariffs imposed by the United States. Von der Leyen stated that Brussels will always be open to negotiation and will manage trade conflicts on behalf of the 27 member countries.

During a press conference in the Oval Office with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin, former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his discontent with the European Union and accused Ireland of taking advantage of his country. Trump mentioned that he will respond to the tariffs announced by the EU and criticized Ireland for hosting U.S. companies on its territory.

The tariffs will affect a wide range of products, including steel, aluminum, textiles, leather goods, appliances, tools, plastics, wood, and agricultural products such as poultry, beef, seafood, nuts, eggs, sugar, and vegetables. Von der Leyen emphasized that this measure will not benefit either economy and that jobs are at stake in both Europe and the United States.

Trump argued that his tariff policies aim to create jobs in U.S. factories, but Von der Leyen warned about the negative impact they will have on the economy. The European Commission stressed the importance of avoiding burdens on economies with tariffs, especially in the context of geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

The European Union and the United States are in a trade dispute that threatens to raise product prices and generate tensions in the international market.
