Donald Trump declared that, if elected president, he would fire special prosecutor Jack Smith "within two seconds" of taking office. Trump stated that he does not believe he will face an impeachment trial for this decision, claiming that Smith would be one of the first issues to address in his administration.
During an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, Trump asserted that Smith is a "corrupt person" and that he should be removed. The former president has regularly attacked Smith and has hinted in the past at his dismissal, saying he would order the Justice Department to fire him.
In response to the possibility of an impeachment trial, Trump mentioned that he himself likely could not directly fire Smith since he is not a presidential appointee. However, as president, Trump previously pressured his White House lawyer to fire special prosecutor Robert Mueller during the Russiagate investigation.
Smith's allegations against Trump include efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and illegal handling of classified documents. Although one of the cases brought by Smith was dismissed, the special prosecutor continues his work, and Trump has made it clear he is interested in getting rid of him if he comes back to power.
