Washington, Dec 6. - The Governments of the United States and Peru reaffirmed this Friday their cooperation to combat drug trafficking, as well as the promotion of new investment opportunities in strategic sectors such as critical minerals and infrastructure, following a bilateral meeting in Washington. The meeting was sponsored by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who received Peruvian Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela, according to a post by Rubio on his official X account. According to the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister De Zela was accompanied by the Ambassador of Peru to the United States, Alfredo Ferrero, and other members of the diplomatic mission. Without providing details, Rubio said the meeting served to agree to continue bilateral work to 'dismantle' criminal organizations in the region and boost cooperation in 'critical minerals,' as well as 'strengthen cooperation on security.' For its part, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that during the meeting, De Zela and Rubio discussed the National Security Strategy published today by the United States, which will serve the two countries to 'strengthen' cooperation. Finally, De Zela addressed with Rubio a possible collaboration in the aerospace sector and investment in sectors related to mining and infrastructure. The Peruvian Foreign Minister invited Rubio to visit Lima and, according to the Peruvian communiqué, the Secretary of State will be in the South American nation in 2026.
