Mogul Jeff Bezos has instructed the Washington Post, which he owns, to change its focus in the opinion section and begin publishing daily columns that support "individual liberties and the free market." Bezos stated that from now on, the newspaper will focus on daily writing in support and defense of these two fundamental pillars.
In a message directed to the Washington Post staff, Bezos indicated his alignment with U.S. President Donald Trump and affirmed that other topics will be covered besides individual liberties and free markets, although opposing viewpoints to these pillars will be relegated to being published in other media.
As a consequence of this decision, the newspaper's Opinion Chief, David Shipley, has resigned. Bezos justified the change by arguing that currently, thanks to the internet, readers can access a diversity of viewpoints, so he considers it unnecessary for newspapers to cover all perspectives in their opinion sections.
This is not the first time Jeff Bezos has intervened in the editorial decisions of the Washington Post. During the last electoral campaign, he halted the newspaper's decision to endorse Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, ordering to maintain neutrality.
The Washington Post, known for its critical stance towards Donald Trump during his first presidential term, endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020. Bezos, who donated 1 million dollars for Trump's inauguration, was present at the Republican's swearing-in on January 20.
