US President Donald Trump has once again threatened to attack Iran if the Islamic Republic does not agree to close a nuclear deal preventing the development of atomic weapons. He made these statements at his private residence, Mar-a-Lago in Florida, when questioned about the words of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who warned that a US attack would unleash a regional war.
"We have the biggest and most powerful ships in the world there, very close, a couple of days away. Hopefully, we will reach an agreement. If we don't, then we will find out whether he was right or not," Trump declared.
Tensions between the two countries remain high. Last year, negotiations broke down after Trump ordered the bombing of three Iranian nuclear facilities. The situation escalated again in January due to the Iranian government's repression of protests, during which thousands of demonstrators died according to human rights groups. The US has deployed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, guided-missile destroyers, and thousands of additional soldiers near Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf.
