The U.S. Senate confirmed Pete Hegseth, former Fox News host and member of the National Guard, as the new Secretary of Defense on Friday, with the decisive vote of Vice President JD Vance after a tied vote of 50-50.
Hegseth, who was assigned to Guantanamo Naval Base, admitted during a hearing to his atypical character as a candidate, but emphasized his commitment to fighting against war. Amid criticisms for alleged mismanagement of veterans' organizations, he defended his ability to lead a military budget of nearly $900 billion.
Hegseth's confirmation marked the first time since 1989 that a Secretary of Defense nominee was approved by a tie, thanks to the favorable vote of Vice President Vance. Despite the controversy surrounding his nomination, including allegations of sexual abuse, Hegseth will take office as the person in charge of managing active military personnel.
In response to the accusations against him, Hegseth denied the allegations and labeled the criticisms as political persecution. Despite the opposition from some Republican senators, his appointment was ultimately confirmed, leaving President Trump surprised, who supported his nomination.
