The United States Department of Justice has issued a memorandum with instructions to investigate and prosecute local officials who do not comply with the orders of the Donald Trump Government regarding immigration. The memorandum, signed by acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, states that federal law prohibits state and local authorities from resisting, obstructing, or failing to comply in any way with legal orders and requests related to immigration.
The document, which has been circulated among Department staff, indicates that the offices of federal prosecutors and legal divisions will investigate cases of misconduct by local officials to determine if they warrant possible criminal prosecution. The main focus of this order is on officials from so-called 'sanctuary cities,' which are cities that do not cooperate on immigration issues with the United States Government, including some of the largest cities in the country.
The memorandum also urges Department of Justice officials to take legal action against 'sanctuary laws,' in an attempt to reinforce the immigration policy of the Trump administration. This measure is part of the Trump Government's stance to prioritize immigration and border security, with the threat of carrying out large-scale raids and mass deportations as part of its second term in the White House.
