On Tuesday, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, threatened to impose more sanctions on Russia if Putin refuses to negotiate a ceasefire with Ukraine. The proposed deadline of 100 days by Keith Kellogg, Trump's special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, has ended without progress since Trump took office.
Trump expressed in a press conference at the White House that he is reconsidering sending arms to Ukraine and plans to talk with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin in the near future. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the United States has imposed sanctions on Russia with the aim of international isolation.
Regarding China, Trump stated that he is considering imposing a 10% tariff on Chinese imports in retaliation for the flow of fentanyl. He expressed his concern about the massive entry of this drug into the United States through Mexico and Canada. Trump mentioned that he had talked with Chinese President Xi Jinping about this issue and highlighted the importance of stopping the fentanyl drug trafficking.
Additionally, Trump criticized the strategy of his predecessor, Joe Biden, of sending large amounts of weaponry to Ukraine to repel Russian aggression. During the appearance, he emphasized that the European Union should contribute more to resolving the conflict in Ukraine, as it is geographically closer.
During his electoral campaign, Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours, although he did not detail how he would achieve it. Kellyanne Conway, in an interview with Fox News, mentioned the possibility of extending the negotiation deadline to achieve peace in the region, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding this conflict.
