The temperature in Philadelphia, USA, is decreasing, and there is a possibility of snowfall. To prevent the formation of ice and snow on the roads and streets, the authorities began to salt the streets. However, the idea of using the surface of the roads for natural melting of ice emerged. The newspaper "Philadelphia Inquirer" reported on a three-phase project by Drexel University for creating self-deicing concrete that could ensure safety on the roads during the winter months. This would help avoid problems related to ecology and the costs of traditional road salting. Professor of engineering and head of the advanced materials laboratory at Drexel University Amir Varnam noted that regular salting requires substantial consumption of energy resources and may harm the roads and sidewalks. "We were looking for an alternative solution," he said. However, Varnam added: "Philadelphia should not completely abandon salting the roads."
