Mexican Director Premieres Film on Migration

Mexican director Jonás Cuarón premieres 'Campeón Gabacho', a migration story starring Rubén Blades. The film tells the story of Liborio, a young Mexican who recently arrived in New York after a journey through the southern border of the United States. He faces discrimination, lack of opportunities, and the harsh reality of the 'American dream.' On his way, he finds in boxing and in the director of a shelter for migrant minors, played by Rubén Blades, a guide and inspiration to not stay down, get back in the ring, and fight back. The director, in an interview with EFE, explained that Liborio's story seeks to portray the migration experience from a more 'human and personal' perspective. 'It was very important in the adaptation to talk about a broader Latin America, not just a Mexican community. I also constantly tried to show the wealth that the migrant community has in the United States and how much they contribute,' he shared. Cuarón noted that he is very inspired by how the film talks about community. 'That moment where Liborio takes the hit but gets back up speaks a lot about his resilience. It's the story of a teenager trying to define himself, and he does it not through what other people say about him, but through the place he finds in his community,' he added. The film, the third in the filmography of the son of renowned filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, is based on a novel by Mexican author Aura Xilonen, published in 2015, and features a soundtrack with songs from artists across Latin America.
