The U.S. Department of Justice published an investigation concluding that the conditions of the Fulton County Jail in Georgia violate the Constitution and federal laws. Among the irregularities detected are the lack of protection for inmates against violence, unconstitutional, unsanitary, and dangerous living conditions, and the discriminatory and unconstitutional use of isolation.
According to the report, individuals confined in this jail, including minors aged 17 and younger and persons with disabilities, are exposed to considerable harm. In August 2023, Republican Donald Trump and 18 alleged accomplices were booked at this jail, accused of forming a mafia-like scheme to overturn the results of the 2020 general elections in Georgia, where Trump lost to current President Joe Biden.
Despite being arrested for only 20 minutes and posting bail, Trump was photographed for his booking photo, becoming the first former U.S. president to experience this situation. He used that photograph for campaign purposes and recently won the presidential elections on November 5.
Since 2022, six people have died from violence inside this jail, with over 300 stabbings occurring just in 2023, according to the investigation. In 2022, poor prison conditions were reported after the body of an inmate affected by bedbugs was found.
