The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has officially confirmed that Cadillac, backed by General Motors, will join the Formula 1 grid starting next year. The news comes a few months after it was announced that F1 would expand its grid in 2026.
According to a statement released this Friday by the FIA, after completing the necessary sports, technical, and commercial consultations, the application from General Motors and TWG Motorsports to enter a Cadillac team into the Formula One World Championship was approved. With the inclusion of Cadillac, the 2026 championship will feature 22 drivers and a total of eleven teams.
Amid this news, speculation arises about the possible hiring of Mexican driver Sergio 'Checo' Pérez by Cadillac. Following his departure from Red Bull Racing in December 2024, reports have circulated suggesting that the new team would be considering Pérez for one of the driver seats.
While there is no official confirmation regarding Pérez's hiring, it has been mentioned that Cadillac is already in talks with the Mexican driver, valuing his extensive experience as a key factor for his potential incorporation into the team. Despite these rumors, the team has only shared a few videos about what their car might look like in the upcoming season.
On the other hand, the 2025 Formula 1 season continues with Dutch driver Max Verstappen from Red Bull seeking his fifth consecutive title. The championship, consisting of 24 races, will begin on March 16 in Melbourne and conclude on December 7 at Yas Marina with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, including notable events such as the Mexican Grand Prix on October 26.
