US Indicts Key Figure in Sinaloa Cartel Drug Conspiracy

The government of the United States, through the Department of Justice, has identified José Ángel Cannobio Inzunza, known as 'El Guerito', as one of the key allies of 'Los Chapitos', a faction that emerged from the Sinaloa cartel previously led by Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán.

A federal grand jury in Chicago has charged Cannobio Inzunza with trafficking fentanyl from Mexico to the United States, as well as serving as the head of security and chief advisor to Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar. The latter was allegedly captured on August 29 in Culiacán, although the veracity of this incident was later denied.

The Department of Justice has stated that Cannobio Inzunza, along with the brothers known as 'Los Chapitos' and other accomplices, conspired to produce cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and marijuana in Mexico. He has also been identified as responsible for providing security to Los Chapitos through his armed group 'Los Chimales', which is in charge of sending fentanyl to the United States, which is considered a conspiracy to facilitate the manufacturing and distribution of drugs.

The American institution has asserted that Cannobio Inzunza funded and led Los Chimales, the armed group responsible for protecting the Guzmán faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Despite being believed to be currently in Mexico, the U.S. government has issued an arrest warrant with the possibility of a life sentence if detained. Along with his brother Jorge Abraham Cannobio, alias 'El Bronto', both appear in flyers dropped during episodes of violence in Culiacán, Sinaloa, alongside the images of other drug traffickers.

Both the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) continue their investigations into the case.
