Roberto Velasco holds first call with Marco Rubio

Roberto Velasco, Mexico's new Secretary of Foreign Relations, held his first official communication with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a call where both officials outlined the main axes of the bilateral relationship. According to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), the contact was "productive and cordial" and served as a first approach after his ratification in the position by the Senate last week. During the conversation, Velasco thanked Rubio for his congratulations on his appointment. In its official statement, the United States also noted that Rubio also addressed efforts to deter massive illegal migration, secure our borders, and promote regional stability. Later, in a message to SRE officials, Velasco referred to the tone of this first contact and the direction he seeks to give to his management: "Our priority agenda will be the defense of national sovereignty and territorial integrity," he stated. He added that cooperation on security will be maintained "without subordination and in strict compliance with the Constitution and international law". The call between Velasco and Rubio took place just nine days after his designation by President Claudia Sheinbaum.
