U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance sparked controversy on Wednesday by stating that Tehran's first peace proposal and the first ten points of the plan 'appear to be written with ChatGPT'. At a press conference before boarding his plane in Budapest, Vance criticized the spread of Iran's initial 10-point peace plan, saying that he, U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff, and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, 'threw it in the trash' because they believed it 'was drafted with ChatGPT'. The vice president added that he has been involved in negotiations with the Islamic Republic, mediated by Pakistan, and that Tehran has presented three distinct proposals to reach a final agreement that would end the hostilities initiated on February 28 by the United States and Israel. Tehran presented the plan referred to by Vance on Monday, consisting of 10 points, including the end of hostilities against Iran and its allies in the region, a safe passage protocol for the Strait of Hormuz—which Iran has kept partially closed since the start of the war—the withdrawal of U.S. troops sent to the Middle East, and the lifting of international sanctions. The White House stated that the proposal Washington accepted to impose a two-week ceasefire is a different, condensed plan that apparently does not obligate the Pentagon to withdraw the thousands of troops it has deployed in the region. Vance was asked about the Iranian accusation against the Trump administration for violating the ceasefire through Israeli attacks on Lebanon and said that Washington 'never' promised it would not attack this territory. 'I honestly wonder how well he understands English because there were things he said that, frankly, made no sense in the context of the negotiations we've had,' Vance said, referring to the accusations made by the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammed Ghalibaf. Earlier, Ghalibaf accused the United States of violating several points of the ceasefire by denouncing attacks in Lebanese territory and other actions that, in his view, contradict the terms proposed by Tehran. According to Vance, Israel has committed to 'exercising restraint' regarding attacks on Lebanon so that the peace negotiations are successful. Iran and the U.S. agreed on Tuesday to a two-week ceasefire conditional on the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz and are scheduled to meet at the end of the week in Islamabad to negotiate an end to the conflict.
