US Secretary of Defense Reports Sinking of Iranian Warship

The US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, reported on Wednesday that a torpedo fired by US forces sank an Iranian warship in international waters. This was reported by outlets such as Bloomberg and the Associated Press, expanding on information from Xinhua, which stated that the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena had been attacked by a submarine off the coast of Sri Lanka. According to sources from the Sri Lankan Navy, cited by Xinhua and reported by the Argentine News Agency, 100 people died in the attack. Local media had previously reported that around 180 people were on board the frigate, and the Sri Lankan Navy immediately launched rescue operations after receiving a distress call reporting the ship's sinking. A total of 35 people from the frigate were rescued and taken to the Karapitiya University Hospital in the southern city of Galle. The incident occurred outside Sri Lanka's territorial waters, according to reports citing Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath.
