US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he will impose a 10% tariff on all goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland over the issue of Greenland. These tariffs, which will apply from February 1, will increase to 25% on June 1 and will remain in effect until an agreement is reached for the United States to purchase Greenland, the head of state announced on social media. Trump's statement came after several NATO members, including the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, opposed the United States' attempt to acquire Greenland and sent troops and diplomatic resources there. Trump stated that his country needs to take control of Greenland to protect US national security. 'Therefore, it is imperative that, in order to protect world peace and security, strong measures be taken to end this potentially dangerous situation quickly and without a doubt,' he added. He also said that the United States 'is willing to negotiate immediately with Denmark and/or any of these countries that have put so much at risk, despite everything we have done for them, including maximum protection, for so many decades.' Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and Copenhagen maintains control over defense and foreign policy. Since returning to office in 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to 'acquire' Greenland and has recently intensified this goal. Meanwhile, thousands of people took to the streets of Copenhagen on Saturday to protest against US actions and statements suggesting control over Greenland.
