US President Donald Trump said today that there will be an agreement for his country to acquire Greenland in the not-so-distant future, "whether the locals and Denmark, to which that territory belongs, like it or not." Denmark is a member of both NATO and the European Union.
"I would like to achieve an agreement the easy way, but if we cannot achieve it the easy way, we will do it the hard way," the US president told reporters at an event at the White House, adding that "he will do something about Greenland, like it or not."
When asked about media reports that the White House is considering paying Greenlanders for their agreement to join the United States, Trump replied, "I am not talking about money yet."
Both Greenland and Denmark have made it clear that the island is not for sale.
The Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, said on Monday that "if the United States decides to militarily attack another NATO country, then everything ceases, including NATO and also the security established at the end of World War II."
