US Imposes Sanctions on ICC Judges

The United States imposed sanctions on two additional judges of the International Criminal Court on Thursday. The U.S. government announced the decision. It was made in response to the court's investigation into possible war crimes in Afghanistan. The U.S. is not a party to the Rome Statute, which established the International Criminal Court. Washington believes the court is acting without jurisdiction over American citizens. Last year, the U.S. already imposed sanctions on the court's chief prosecutor and another judge. The new measures are aimed at pressuring the court and halting investigations involving Americans. The International Criminal Court, based in The Hague, was created to prosecute individuals responsible for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The U.S. claims the sanctions are not against the court's independence but are a response to what it considers its illegal actions.
