Trump Announces G20 South Africa Summit Boycott

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that no U.S. government officials will attend the G20 summit in South Africa later this month, repeating his statements about the white minority in the African nation being 'subjected to systematic killing and slaughter.' U.S. President Donald Trump announced that no American officials will attend the G20 summit to be held in South Africa, reiterating his comments about the white minority 'being subjected to systematic killing and slaughter' in this African country. Trump had announced in September that Vice President J.D. Vance would represent him at the summit before he reversed course and announced a complete boycott. Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: 'It is a total disgrace that the G20 summit is being held in South Africa.' He added: 'No U.S. government official will attend as long as these human rights violations continue.' Trump stated that the Afrikaners, or the white minority descended from early European settlers in South Africa, 'are being subjected to killing and slaughter, and their land and farms are being illegally seized.' South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation described Trump's remarks as 'unfortunate,' adding that it looks forward to hosting a 'successful' summit to be held on November 22-23. The department said in a statement: 'Describing Afrikaners as a purely white group is ahistorical. Furthermore, the claim that this group faces persecution is baseless.' South Africa chose 'Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability' as the theme for its G20 presidency, but it has faced some opposition, particularly from the United States, which is the richest member of the group. The department said: 'South Africa continues to focus on its positive contributions globally.' It added: 'Drawing from our own journey from apartheid and ethnic division to democracy, our nation is uniquely placed to advocate for a future of genuine solidarity within the G20.' Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has attacked South Africa on several issues, most notably his claims of a 'white genocide' in the country.
