Two leaders of a criminal group known as Los Zetas, Miguel Ángel and Omar Treviño, were transferred to prisons in various cities in the United States, including Chicago, Houston, and New York. The Treviño brothers face charges of organized crime, drug trafficking, possession of weapons, and money laundering, with the possibility of being sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty. Miguel Ángel Treviño, also known as 'El Z40', was part of the Gulf Cartel and led the criminal operations of Los Zetas in several Mexican states, wreaking havoc in Coahuila, Zacatecas, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, and Veracruz. He was arrested in 2013 during an operation in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, with a significant amount of cash and high-caliber weapons. On the other hand, Omar Treviño, alias 'El Z42', was later detained in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León. He rose through the organization to become a commander and expanded its operations to Guatemala. The Treviño brothers pleaded not guilty during their first hearing in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The hearing was brief, and the legal process is expected to be complex, with the presentation of various evidence. U.S. officials stated they have sufficient evidence for the trial. During the hearing, their attorney, Frank Pérez, who also represents Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, was present. This was the first legal encounter of the Treviño brothers after being extradited from Mexico at the end of February, in a historic operation under international cooperation agreements.
