U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the cessation of all federal funding for colleges and schools that allow "illegal" protests.
Trump stated: "Colleges and universities should not become a platform for extremism and anarchy. We will not allow educational institutions to disguise themselves against the government with funding from the government."
This statement came after months of protests that led to riots and violence on the campuses of some educational institutions in the United States.
In response to Trump’s announcement, some student groups expressed their dismay, stating that this violates their rights to free speech and peaceful assembly.
"We believe that this decision by the president threatens our rights and freedoms. We will continue to stand up for our beliefs," said a representative of the student organization.
