The United States government, led by President Trump, has announced a new strategy to combat irregular immigration in the border region. According to the U.S. embassy, by expelling migrants and repatriating them far from the border area, new attempts at illegal crossing are prevented while reducing illicit cross-border activity.
The measure aims to allow both Mexican and U.S. security agents to focus on other tasks rather than dedicating themselves solely to containing migrants. For this reason, the number of federal agents in charge of detaining undocumented migrants has increased.
Initially, President Trump indicated that he would focus on those migrants with criminal backgrounds and assured that being deported would be definitive, with no chance of another attempt in the future. Since his campaign, Trump has maintained a tough stance against irregular immigration, arguing that this measure will allow law enforcement to prevent criminals and smuggling from entering the country.
The embassy also highlighted that this strategy will benefit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office, alleviating the burden on Border Patrol agents and CBP officers working to keep the border secure. Furthermore, it was reported that the Trump administration has engaged various departments and agencies with the goal of halting migration flows and ensuring that illegal migrants are arrested, processed if necessary, and expelled from the U.S.-Mexico border.
In a direct message to those planning to enter the United States illegally, the embassy emphasized that illegal entry is not a viable option. Migrants who are deported from the United States will be sent to the border between Mexico and Guatemala, as part of this new policy. This measure is expected to alleviate pressure on border cities and facilitate mass deportations in the early days of this new governmental period.
