In Texas, the possibility of converting Starbase into an official city with the same name is being debated. Currently under SpaceX's control, approval would require a simple majority in the upcoming vote. If the proposal is accepted, Starbase would be recognized as a Type C municipality, intended for localities with less than 3.2 square kilometers and between 200 and 5,000 inhabitants.
The order to hold the election was signed by Cameron County Judge Eddie TreviƱo, approving the petition submitted by SpaceX employees in December. If approved, Starbase would become the first new city in Cameron County since 1995.
Meanwhile, not everyone agrees with the potential municipalization of Starbase. The petition includes Gunnar Milburn, current director of security at SpaceX, as the sole candidate for mayor, making him the city's first mayor. A key requirement for the validity of the petition was the support of 10 percent of residents.
Despite the signatures collected, mostly from SpaceX employees, environmental groups have expressed their opposition due to alleged environmental violations by SpaceX with its rocket launches. This situation has generated some controversy in the region. The vote to determine the future of Starbase as a city will take place on May 3, with early voting beginning in late April.
Currently, SpaceX manages the roads, schools, and utilities in the area, suggesting a high level of influence from the company in the local community. Of the residences registered in the minutes, the vast majority belong to SpaceX, which could grant Elon Musk unprecedented control over an inhabited territory if the proposal is approved.
