Tech magnate Elon Musk defended the measures of his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to cut costs by dismantling part of the U.S. public apparatus. At the World Summit of Governments, Musk advocated for the elimination of entire agencies, reducing laws, digitalizing systems, modernizing computers, and reforming the education system. Musk forecast a significant cost reduction and anticipated no inflation between 2025 and 2026.
In his statements, Musk supported the reduction of the bureaucracy's size in the United States and the layoff program for public employees, offering generous packages to those who were laid off. He highlighted the importance of improving technology to cut costs, mentioning the experience at Twitter, where staff was reduced by 80% while the functionality and capabilities of the site improved dramatically.
Additionally, he noted that the U.S. government operates with thousands of old computers running outdated software, making communication between them difficult. Musk emphasized the need to modernize government technology for greater efficiency and long-term cost reduction.
