Day Without Latinos: A Call to Action

A movement is gaining momentum among Latino immigrants in the United States residing in the DMV region (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia). Under the initiative called "Day Without Latinos," they are encouraged not to attend work, school, or make purchases this Monday, February 3, 2025. The purpose of this action is to raise awareness about the significance of Latino contributions to the U.S. economy.

The "Day Without Latinos" is presented as a peaceful and symbolic way to express the discontent of millions of immigrants who, despite their constant efforts, feel invisible and vulnerable to immigration policies. The film "A Day Without a Mexican," directed by Sergio Arau and released in 2004, suggests the mysterious disappearance of all Mexican migrants and those from other parts of Latin America, becoming a potential reality in light of this "Day Without Latinos".

This movement has been supported by a number of figures, including influencer and entrepreneur Muñeca Diamante de Rubí, who announced the closure of her business in solidarity with the campaign. In a video published on social media, it was explained that the intention is to highlight the importance of the Latino community and to support it unconditionally.

The activist behind this initiative, who preferred to remain anonymous for security reasons, emphasized the need for work permits to be granted and deportations to be stopped for immigrants. In a context of increasing discrimination and restrictive policies, raising a voice in favor of migrant families becomes a crucial task.

Although it started as a local protest, this movement has rapidly expanded and garnered support from various communities in other states such as California. The central idea is to demonstrate how the absence of immigrants could negatively impact the economy and the daily functioning of the country.
