An important fact that confirms that the United States cannot allow that the projected power controls resources, remains not only today. Guaranteeing that Europe remains tightly connected to America, with the limited Chinese influence on the continent, forms the basis of the global balance of power in favor of the USA and democracies in all global aspects, both economic and military. Competition, especially intensified with China, forces the United States to ensure that their European allies do not succumb to the Chinese lure.
The importance of the strategic alliance is not limited to the vast NATO of Europe, its resources of workforce and technology, which support America, allowing NATO to achieve American and European goals at reasonable cost. From a geopolitical point of view, the most important thing is that Europe is a key strategic point in which the USA can project its power on a multitude of key scenes, and without the alliance with Europe, the USA would revert to positioning itself on the other side of the earthly sphere.
"Europe has become for us an 'inescapable aviation anchor' of the USA, which does not fade, but on a much larger scale," – the famous phrase, attributed to General Hastings Ismay, emphasizes the importance of the European role in the modern world. The USA has invested its resources and reputation in Europe to build a 'deterrent wall', which contained the Soviet Union under control for half a century after World War II.
Refusal of this investment could potentially undermine not only NATO and the American position in Europe, but also America's position throughout the world. Losing American trust in Europe would lead to the loss of its authority in the Pacific Ocean, the Near East, and other regions.
The defense of Europe and the preserved American presence in the region should be considered not only as an obligatory condition but also as a strategic interest and national security. The creation of the NATO alliance played a huge role in preventing massive expenditures, both human and economic, related to a full-scale war.
The USA stands before the most significant shift in its foreign policy since 1945, and the administration of President Donald Trump possesses the capability to reassess the country’s strategic priorities both domestically and internationally.
