Mexican Embassy Urges Nationals to Know Their Rights

The Mexican embassy in the United States has issued a call to citizens to know their rights and be prepared in case of possible visits to their homes or detentions. In this regard, it is recommended that Mexicans in the United States avoid revealing their immigration status during home raids or arrests. It is also emphasized the importance of seeking consular or legal help before answering any questions that may cause problems.

According to the embassy, "If authorities detain you, ask to speak with the consulate and do not reveal your immigration status." Furthermore, Mexicans are urged to have a family plan in case there are minors whose parents are detained. It is recommended to have a power of attorney letter specifying who will take care of the children in case of an emergency.

On the other hand, the Mexican ambassador to the United States, Esteban Moctezuma, has pointed out that the first days of Donald Trump's presidency present the first obstacles that Mexico will have to overcome in its bilateral relationship. In a video, Moctezuma highlighted the initial actions of the U.S. president and assured that Mexico will maintain its autonomy in the face of these challenges.

Among the difficulties ahead, the possibility of criminal cartels being designated as terrorists stands out. Moctezuma mentioned that more details are expected in the coming weeks and underscored the importance of the United States doing what is necessary on its territory regarding drug consumption. In this sense, the intention of both countries to collaborate while respecting each other's autonomy boundaries was emphasized.
